I have two.

1. They won't get off a story, even when it's been reported to death and EVERYONE is sick of hearing about it. (How many days have they been reporting about the molesing father from Austria?)

2. They are so stinking mellow dramatic, and it seems like they'll say anything to make a realatively un-interesting story sound like the end of the world - have to make EVERYTHING sound terrible. (They ought as well have headlines like "Oh dear God, we are going into a recession and everyone is going to die!" or possible "The war in Iraq isn't over yet and everyone hates the war and we're all going to die!" - you get the point. They are just too mellow dramatic.

Except for your spelling of "melodramatic," I have to agree with you. Lots of stories, especially on the other side of the world, go unmentioned in US news while the big showy pieces get done to death.
I was also thinking about how much lower the casualty rate is in Iraq than it was in Vietnam, and about how gun violence in schools is so much lower than it was fifteen years ago. You'd get the opposite impression of either from a casual look at the news.
The misimpressions they leave by their methods are making, not reporting, news. I feel especially strongly that the nuts that are shooting up places are motivated as much by media attention as any other warped idea.
