Is BitTorrent safe?

I downloaded BitTorrent and I'm wondering if it makes your computer more prone to viruses or not. I downloaded it from BitTorrent's official website. I DO have an antivirus program that runs every night, so would it be okay?

u can also share a virus on torrents

The client is safe, but it's the users who cause the danger and don't forget it's illegal.
