Is it safe to buy a mobile phone from overseas?

I am living in Australia but am going to America for two weeks soon, and am thinking of buying a mobile phone I really want. Is it worth buying from overseas? Are there usually issues about phones not working in other countries; and if I am having technical problems with the phone could I take it to a phone store in Australia, or would they be unable to fix it because its not available here?
 
Better way to use cellphone in your country is getting a mobile that is is compatible with the frequency of the networks in the country.A tri-band or quad-band phone will work in almost any country .Check that your new mobile is not locked to any particular network .If the your mobile is locked with any particular mobile means you can't use any other local sim card in other country .If the mobile is GSM means you can unlock your new mobile from the network by getting unlocking service from any online vendor like TheUnlockSpot.com .After unlocking your new mobile you can use it in other country.
