General hard acceleration question (MOST HELPFUL ANSWER=BEST ANSWER)?

When I accelerate hard (floor it) and the revs climb up and they reach almost redline (like on the Yukon XL, max is 6000RPM, and the Volvo is 8000RPM) the Yukon reaches 4000 (the volvo 6000) and the motors sounds like its working hard, especially on the Yukon.

Is it better to keep my foot on the gas and let the tranny shift automatically, or to take my foot off the gas so the tranny shifts up (1-2, 2-3) and then continue to accelerate hard? (the volvo has 80k and its had engine problems and i dont wanna rev so high that something pops on the engine)

You could try driving normal. Saves gas and engine/transmission wear and tear.
