The Detroit Lions previously invested a first-round draft pick to select tight end Brandon Pettigrew.
Detroit is willing to invest another four years into Pettigrew.
According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Pettigrew agreed to a four-year deal worth $16 million ($8 million guaranteed). He is expected to sign that contract in Detroit on Friday.
Pettigrew was one of the best tight ends available in a very weak market. Jimmy Graham is the top tight end, but he received the franchise tag by New Orleans. No team has been willing to give up two first-round draft picks to obtain Graham.
Former Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley is also available. Finley recently visited the Seattle Seahawks, but left without a contract.
Pettigrew was the 20th overall pick in the 2009 draft. He was expected to emerge into an elite tight end, but has struggled with drops throughout his career. Last season, Pettigrew had 41 receptions for 416 yards and two touchdowns. Those were Pettigrew’s lowest totals since his rookie year.
Fortunately, for Pettigrew, those numbers were enough to stick around in Detroit.
