I have met some people who state they don't like any fantasy or sci fi. Can you explain that to me? Does that mean they can't appreciate the social commentary in Gulliver's Travels or Animal Farm? What about rom coms such as Like Water for Chocolate or Penelope? Do they know that a lot of classics are fantasy - the Iliad - or sci fi - Frankenstein. The earliest stories known to man are fantasies: Beowolf, Gilgamesh.

What is wrong with these people and why does it hurt my brain when I meet one?

It's not the same thing to dislike Opera or Romance movies. Disliking all fantasy is more like disliking all musicals, of which opera is a subgenre. That would mean you dislike The Blues Brothers, The South Park movie, The Lion King, and The Wizard of Oz. Also, many action, fantasy, sci fi movies have a romantic subplot. I've never heard a sci fi fan declarying they dislike the Star Wars trilogy because of the romance between Han Solo and Princess Leia.
