Much of the focus since Jose Mourinho returned to Chelsea has been on his relationship with the club's two-time player of the year Juan Mata. But after a strong second-half performance in last weekend's 1-1 draw against Spurs, Mata has apparently worked his way back into Mourinho's good graces just as Kevin De Bruyne has been forced to train with the U-21s after a poor performance in the Capital One Cup against Swindon. And since bad news has a tendency to sell more newspapers than good news, reporters at Mourinho's press conference ahead of Tuesday's Champions League match against Steaua Bucharest switched their focus from Mata to De Bruyne.
But after one too many questions about the 22-year-old Belgian midfielder, Mourinho was understandably frustrated.
"This is fantastic because nobody asks me about Mata," he said sarcastically. "You are three weeks speaking about Mata. And now you are speaking about Kevin De Bruyne, so you are not interested in the players that are playing. You are interested in the players that are not playing."
Mourinho then explained his decision on De Bruyne before saying, "You have this tendency to only ask about the guys who are not playing. See you tomorrow." And with that, he got up and left, leaving Frank Lampard to handle the rest of the press conference on his lonesome. Sadly, he did not do an impression of Mourinho while answering the remaining questions.
