I found a Jetta for 1 000 $. It has 196 000 kilometers and is in good condition, although the seller says that the water pump needs to be changed because the engine overheatsif you use it for too long. Is that bad ? Is this car safe and durable ? Is it worth it ?

personally i would say not to buy it you rather spend extra and buy a fully working jetta

yeah , the eng over heats because it just a little simple thing like water pump . That is why he is selling it and not replacing the water pump
.
you seller is a liar.

jetta are only good when they are new and not more than 6 years old. , like many euro cars.
After that , they a expensive problems . if it has a auto transmission dont buy it . cost 5000 to repair.

VW's service intervals are at 15,000 KMs. Check the service record with the VW dealer before you buy the car. Reasons:
a) Of course water pump expense.
b) Many rubber parts like the hose connecting the radiator & the engine, and many other rubber hoses from the engine would have degraded over time.
c) The gasket of the engine may need replacement if the engine has been overheating for quite some time now.
d) Check the condition of break pads, as well as the disk drum itself. If it was not replaced at about 150K, that will need replacement.
Basically, if you buy this car, you can LEARN a lot about VWs car mechanism before you offload it to someone else. But if your need for this car is temporary, like no more than 1 year, then go for it, and just change the water pump.

Buy it ASAP! The water pump is cheap, and if you replace that you might as well get the timing belt done!

A newer low mileage Jetta is risky, but THIS one will definitely give you headaches. Buyer beware.

Never buy a car when the seller says "oh, it just needs a -----------" (anything)

If that were REALLY all it needed, he would have DONE it and sold the car TWO thousand.
