Linux users: are any of you experiencing issues with the Transmission BitTorrent app?

I'm having some issues with Transmission. It seems that whenever I open the app, my system slows to a crawl. It's almost impossible to run while Virtualbox is running. If I open a web browser in addition to these two programs (either in the host or the guest OS), my system becomes damn near unresponsive.

Virtualbox itself is not the culprit. Transmission gobbles up my system resources whether VB is open or not. I'm not at all a Linux noob. I've used this app regularly over the last 2 years; I've only recently noticed a change.

I realize that this probably isn't the best place to find solutions for this type of problem, but I had just asked a question here, so I figured I'd ask this one while waiting for answers to my other question. I would like to figure out if anyone else has this problem before I start digging through forums for an answer.

I have an i7 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and about 500-600 GB of unused hard disk space. I should not be experiencing the type of resource drain that I am describing.

I'm not looking for a diagnosis of the problem per se (it's great if any of you have one, but that's not what I'm looking for); I'm just asking if anyone else is experiencing problems with this one, specific app?

Sorry, I have no solution, but this problem has been around a while (reading the dates on the forums). I use Deluge without a problem, and my processor is not even close to the i7.
