Is Christianity Just One Giant Inequality?

If simply not being a Christian is enough to land you in hell for eternity, and people who actually do commit more serious crimes also go to hell for all of eternity, how is that fair? If someone doesn't know about Christianity through no fault of their own, they're going to be eternally punished? Also how is being eternally punished solving anything? Punishment is supposed to fit the crime, and once the time has been served, the crime has been punished for and is done. The person should be freed, they've served their time, correct? So why does someone get punished FOREVER for something that they were never in control of in the first place. This is morally irresponsible - in a big way. If God is actually omnipotent and omniscient then wouldn't he have realized that there is a much more humane and fair way to go about punishing people for their sins? Unless he's evil or course, which makes him no better than the devil. I think that even if God does exist he is morally irresponsible and certainly unworthy of praise.
