    Why are my alt codes just a empty box/square but it works on my other laptop?

    for example ?

    A box or square means that that character is not installed on your operating system, or at least it's not used by whatever program you're trying to use the code in. The code may be right, but the software doesn't have an associated character for the code.

    the solution to this is to download and install the free MicroSoft extensions to the character set you're using. which extension is the problem ... they have about 50 of them for different languages.
