Can I lay a subwoofer flat?

Ok, so I have an 01 mustang. I have a 15 inch kicker l3 in a box. The problem is the box it too big. I found a box online that might fit, but I would have to lay it on its back so the speaker is facing up. would this damage the subwoofer in any way?
