What restrictions will a Catholic Christian convert have?

I was baptized into the Catholic Church as an infant, where I was taken to church on Sundays when I was a child. My parents have stopped attending and subsequently stopped also since I was only a child. My parents broke their vow and even prevented me from learning about God and the Church I was baptized into. I had a genuine interest in learning about God and the Church but prevented by parents. I'm only 22 and thinking of joining my parent's church as a convert.

I have been told that I would not be allowed to learn about (The Mother Church) and also forbiden from attending certain events and possibly a video. I mean this in the least offensive way.
I understand that I was supposed to develop beliefs, ideas and attitudes within the church but parents prevented me when I had a genuine interest. I'm sort of over it now knowing it's already too late to develop them.

My Godparents were in California most of the time while I was a child.
