Why are most of the tuned car old Honda?

i live in a sub-urban area, and i've seen many many old civics (like the old ones that had hatch back), and accords (probably around 1998 models) with a big big exhaust and loud engines, but I've NEVER seen those on any newer civics, or any american regular sedans like Focus, or Cruze.

Was it easy to tune the cars back then? and was it easier to do it on Civics?

Because it's hard to steal the newer Civic si. And they can't afford a $6000 K-series swap and the newer are heavier.

The old 'scene' was driven by stolen Integra GSR parts.

Edit: the scene changed to modified WRX, EVO, 350Z

Civics have almost become legengs for indestructable engines that can be tunes to put out fantastic horsepower without exploding. People with old Civics can put a cheap (loud) muffler on and they can pretend like they are tuned to no end. Sort of riding on a legend.

In decades gone by, a person might put duel exhaust (or even fake duel exhaust) on their old Ford or Chev and pretend they had horsepower.People with newer Fords and Chevs never bothered
