Can I stream from iphone or ipad to appletv without a wifi connection?

In other words, do you need wifi for airplay to work, or can it simply send the info from the iphone/ipad. I'm looking to take my appletv to a rental house that doesn't have wifi. I'd rather not buy the ipad HDMI connector.
