    Would a tobacco ban work?

We've tried an alcohol ban before, but not a tobacco ban, and since many think bans on other drugs serve their purpose well enough, why not try a tobacco ban?

After all, it's just so wrong for the government to be claiming how BAD this certain product is for you, and then let it be sold to you legally, just to satisfy the monetary interests of a few corporations, no?
    @Alex

I say we ban tobacco like we do other drugs. What's the worst that could happen? Criminals switch to selling tobacco?

So where would all of the tax revenue from tobacco come from then?

To satisfy the monetary interests of government itself. "Sin taxes," be they from tobacco, alcohol or gambling, yield enormous tax revenue. That is why governments hypocritically go " Tut tut," while gleefully pocketing the money. Given that government today is more likely to be of the pot smoking, non-tobacco smoking, baby boom, I think that they'll leave things just as they are.

Edit - In light of other responses, would it be fair to say that we heartily approve of taxes that we ourselves do not pay, and the banning of pursuits that we ourselves do not follow?

    Not needed.

Smoking is rapidly becoming so "Anti Social" it will (For lack of a better word) die out by it's self. Smoking rates have declined rapidly over the past few decades and with each generation become less and less acceptable.

Eventually it will go the way of snuffing tobaco or having spittoons around.

Of course it won't work. What a silly thing to suggest.

BILLIONS of dollars a year come from tobacco revenue. Why would you want to take that away.

Furthermore. This country was colonized for its ability to grow tobacco. Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia. All huge tobacco producers. One could say that this country is founded on tobacco. Why do you Democrats think you can infringe on other people's lives just because you don't agree with that someone is doing, even though it DOES NOT AFFECT YOU WHATSOEVER.

You can't even complain about resturants or bars with second hand smoke anymore because they are a thing of the past. Get over yourself and out of other people's lives.

If you'll recall, the Alcohol ban failed miserably. What it accomplished was turning small-time thugs and street toughs into organized criminal organizations that in some cases are still in business today.

And while we have bans on other drugs today, anyone can go out there and get their hands on their recreational pharmaceutical of choice without any real difficulty. A look in my local paper's online police blotter shows that the same drug-houses that have been hit 5 times each last year...were hit again last month. So...that ban is not going all that well either.

With our past record of bans, do *you* think that this one would be any different?

Banning tobacco is not enough. We have to take down the whole rotten tobacco industry itself. We have to punish the tobacco industry for killing billions of people and covering up the truth.

"since many think bans on other drugs serve their purpose well enough"

they don't. people still use drugs. there are now more crimes generated by virtue of drugs being illegal that would be nonissues were they legal.

example A: Somebody stole Fred's stash. He can't go to the cops or he'll go to jail. Time to crack some heads.
