BitTorrent itself is totally safe. There's no viruses or anything in it.

However as a program that allows you to download just about anything else you can think of... Sometimes those other things you get might not be safe. Torrent files are notorious for including viruses or malware... However, if you're savvy, and keep a keen eye on what torrents you pull, you can generally stay pretty safe.

There's more to it, but it basically boils down to knowing what type of file you're expecting to receive. For example, if you're looking for a movie, don't download a "movie" file with a name that ends .exe, that kind of thing. MP4, MKV, AVI, are some common legit movie types, and music will typically always be MP3 (might also be bundled with M3U as well, which is just a playlist file)

    Torrent sites are 90% illegal.
i say this because if you do not own the original copy of whatever you downloading, then it is illegal.

for example, if you own an original, store bought copy of a DVD (eg avatar), then downloading the torrent is ok. mostly coz it is equivalent to you backing up your DVD. however, if you do not own the original disc, downloading the movie then becomes illegal.

same for all copyright software on torrents.

there are trackers that can be traced by your ISP. they will know what you downloading. there are ways around it, but the fact that you still asking if its legal makes me know you wont know how to do it. but yeah, it is easy to use.

To know that site legit or not you can follow these methods given below:
You can read user reviews, problems, their quires, responses and rating about the site in Webutation - Website Reputation Community against fraud and badware

You can also do a whois search in the site WhoisXY.com and know the owner, technical, administrative contact details etc.. you can use the phone number or email id which you get in whois search and try to contact the person and clarify your doubts.
