Regular DVD players are probably still available, but it's worth it to spend a bit more to get Blu-Ray - because a Blu-Ray player will play Blu-Ray discs and DVD discs.
P.S. Blu-Ray is NOT the future. The future is not owning any physical media (discs, tapes) at all. Instead all of your movies will come to you via cable, wireless, Internet, etc. That's already reality for a lot of people.
No. It is basically a stop gap measure until Internet connections and online movie services are ubiquitous as running water.
By the middle of the decade, look for the downfall of regular DVD support form major TV and movie studios, and the end of the decade for Blu-Ray.
If I had to today, I would buy a Blu-Ray player, because it has better PQ on an HDTV, more features, and some have online content capabilities, including some of those online movie services.
Honestly, Blue Ray is soon to become obsolete to technologies such as NetFlix and other video streaming sites.
