Would an unlocked HTC Vivid phone work with T-mobile service?

I'm actually happy with my T-mobile service and would like to keep it, but I don't like the phones they have. AT&T has the Vivid which seems to be a good phone for me but I do not like AT&T service. The plans there would be more than I pay now. A friend suggested I get an unlocked phone but I am wary of buying that type of phone online. Is there a way I could get the phone through AT&T and unlock it myself? Or do I ABSOLUTELY have to get the contract with AT&T to get the phone? If I get the service in order to get the phone and terminate my service, would it cost more than buying it unlocked?

Unlocked phones are too expensive . Better you can buy AT&T locked HTC vivid phone from any of the online shops like ebay and unlock it from any of the online vendors like WickedUnlock.com to unlock it at affordable cost .
