I know these phones are basically the same except that one is HTC and the other is T-mobile. And I also think the size of these phones are a little different? But for the most part, they are the same. Could I use a G2 case for a Desire Z phone or vice versa?

Htc makes the g2 btw check under the g2 battery if you don't beleive me

Yes the Desire Z and HTC G2 cases are interchangeable.
At least as far as the OtterBox Commuter Series Hybrid Cases are concerned.
