Why do people take cars to the drag strip that they are afraid to beat on?

Corvettes, new GTOs and Mustangs, I even saw a Lamborghini Murceilago run an 18 second quarter mile. every week there is a dissapointing roster of fast cars running horribly slow times, they don't even do a burnout. what the hell is the point?
