HTC Desire HD (On Telus) to Virgin Mobile?

My boyfriend has a brand new HTC Desire HD that he got through Telus. He bought it, its his, just sitting in his drawer right now, he got an iPhone. He wants to give me the HTC Desire, but I hate Telus with a passion. I would like to put the phone on Virgin Mobile. Is there anyway I can do this? I've heard of "unlocking" but I dont really understand.....can someone explain this? thanks.

If you want to use your Virgin network on HTC Desire HD phone ,Your phone should be unlocked one.
