how do i unlock a iphone 3G?

ok guys well my moms friend gave her the iphone 3g and we cant unlock it. it shows the itunes symbol and it only lets us do emergency calls only? we have at&t and we have the sim card in it but it wont let us do anything so i was wondering what you guys have used that is free and works to unlock it. thanks for all ure help
