    is it a bad idea unlocking an iphone 3g when the contract is over?

    dont know anything about phones, sorry if this seems like a everybody should know question...

    Not at all...you can go ahead and unlock your iPhone. You can use your network provider or third party unlockers like, Unlocking4u.com who offer permanent unlock service at low cost along with free unlock instructions.
