blue ray disc can/not be played on regular dvd player?

My roommate barrowed a movie from a friend and it was a blue ray movie, i argued that we wouldn’t be able to watch it as we don’t have a blue ray DVD player yet. Well just be chance he put it in the DVD player, and it worked perfectly fine. NO issues.. Picture was great, and sound was great. I’m confused by this phenomenon as i was told to watch a blue ray movie it would require a blue ray DVD player. My dvd player is 10 years old so i know its not Blue ray.. Can someone explain to me why this disc worked perfect in my DVD player. THE disc is self shows the blue ray symbol on it..??

It is physically impossible for a regular DVD player to play a blu-ray disc. The geometries on the disc are too small to be read by the laser system in a regular player not to mention the player not having the means to process the data.

Within some formats, there have been some Hybrid disc made. For example many SACD's are actually Hybrid disc containing both the data for SACD and CD. These disc will play in a regular CD player. I've never heard of a Hybrid Blu-Ray where the disc contains both the data for Blu-Ray and DVD but it could be possible by using different layers. Try playing some other Blu-Ray disc on this player and see what happens. I think you will find they will not play.
