When I minimize something it disappears and I have to press ALT + TAB to open them

did u hide the taskbar? its the bluebar at the bottom? if yes, u can take ur cursor down and that bar will show up.. rightclick on it and go to properties and in that u could see some check box which would needs to be unchecked and ok the settings.. that should do it
