Does "surround sound" only work with DVD's and Blue Ray on home theaters?

If you bought the whole package that comes with a dvd player, sub woofer and speakers, you have a home theater in a box and it will only give true s/s on dvd's.
However, you can put the sound field on multi and get sound out of your rear speakers if you connect an audio cable from the tv output to the s/s input.
Buying a a/v receiver gives you an easier way for surround sound but it's better on movies and music.

Wondering if regular TV and Movie Channels should also play in surround sound. I am a first time buyer and although when I do a speaker check they all work and the TV playback sounds good, it's just in stereo

You have to look at the movie itself or the tv guide to see if the movie is in Dolby Digital, if it is then it will have surround sound. Most DVD and blu ray disc movies are encoded with Dolby Digital or DTS for surround sound. Your home theater needs to have an optical audio input for you to connect the tv in to have surround sound. Hope this will help you out.

Regular tv broadcast, NO, You have to subscribe to cable or satellite providers that offers HD programming that usually comes with 5.1 surround sound.
