*legally* they are not blue ray...? Is there any free programs that i can download that are free, legal and somewhat easy to use so i can download Standard dvd's onto my computer...?

Copying a DVD in any way for any reason is illegal by default. So your question is null and void.

I'm pretty sure backing up a dvd to your computer is legal, as long as you don't intend on selling/giving the dvd away. Dvdshrink is a program i've heard of.
