directv HD receivers?

so, if i am going to pay $100 to 'lease' a directv HD receiver, whether it be from directv or from someone on amazon or ebay, am i actually going to have to return the box when it's no longer being used? i know that some of the standard boxes can be purchased without need for return, but is it a differnt situation with the HD boxes?
