My boyfriend wants to change our gearing in our 1999 Mazda Miata 10th Anniversary Edition from 3.91 to something much higher (what he hasn't decided on, though he mentioned as 3.2). I think this will ruin the car (lug it out, make it slow, etc.). However he thinks that by doing so he will gain mileage, save the life of the engine (by running at a lower RPM), and shift less often.
Does anyone have experience in doing this in a similar car? Or is there someone mechanically experienced who knows what the effects of doing this will be? I'm really concerned that it will ruin the car.
