what is the common denominator between VLC, Google Earth, and DivX Player?

lately i've noticed a few programs that open with a garbled, often unreadable font in the GUI. so far the only ones i've found that behave this way are VLC Player (v1.1.4), Google Earth (v6.0.1.2032 (beta)), and DivX Plus Player (v8.1.2). i know more than a little bit about computers, so any level explanations are welcomed, but i don't know what platform (if that's the right word) these three applications might be based on that would cause them to show the same messy font display.

the first time i noticed the messy fonts was the very first time i opened VLC. i generally use VLC only on Macs, so i thought it might just have been an issue with the application running in windows XP. then i noticed the same garbled text in Google Earth, where before there had been no problem, so i knew something was up.

i'm running XP SP3 with an Nvidia Geforce 7600 GT card, updated with latest (Jan. 2011) drivers.

thanks!

here are some screen cap examples of the messy/garbled GUI text:

doing some more research, it seems to have something to do with QuickTime libraries, as faults with them cause this exact problem in both VLC and Google Earth. i found this info, with matching screencaps, in linux/ubuntu forums, some of which offered solutions for dealing with the QT libraries, but haven't found anything that would lead to a solution on XP.
