What is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book about? And is it good?

its about a man who finds out his friend is an alien while the earth is destroyed by another race of aliens. his friend uses a laser to teleport them onto a ship that is destroying the earth. from there they travel to different planets all around the galaxy. they find the greatest weapon ever invented and the ultimate question about time, the universe and everything.
