I had the same problem. You have to get the phone to the idle screen. So press the home button (main button, and then you should see a picture of a USB cable and it should tell you that you are syncing. I had this problem for ever. If that doesn't work try downloading Samsung Kies. Its a program that further allows you to interact with your phone.
