blackberry: once you get blackberry apps, do the apps need internet to work?

the whole apps and blackberry app world confuses me, can someone please explain? thank you verrry much
im confused about the internet mostly, if the apps work without internet acess?, because i only get wifi on mine and im wondering if i can use them out of those zones
