dish network info will a purchased receiver work on dish network?

i just got dish network and i see i have to rent the receivers. i would rather own these. can someone tell me if i get my own receiver will it install on the system, or do i need to call dish network and have them turn it on for me? if it will turn on will i still get the channels i'm paying for now? thanks
