How long do I need to wait to introduce the new cat?

I recently adopted a stray cat and I already have an indoor cat. How long do I need to wait before I introduce the new cat to the one I currently have?

The new cat needs to become comfortable in her/his new home. Remember she/he is already feeling out of place being in a new environment. If she is comfortable you can introduce them. I recently had to bring my cat into a new home as I moved in with someone who had 2 cats already and we let her have the run of the house and watched to make sure she would be ok with the other 2. They have had their squabbles but get along well now. It was a matter of letting the other cats know she was here to stay. They will establish their "pecking order" and the dominant one will rule but will except the other one.

i would do it right away, but slowly. like let them meet outside first, or something.
