I have just begun studying an art degree which includes a seemingly 'light' version of art history

I am also on a personal mission of learning and understanding more about modern, contemporary art.

I feel it would be beneficial to get a good historical oversight of Europe in the 20th century, so I can build up a better picture of the context and environment these artists were working and living in.

Can anybody recommend a book or source for the 'non historian' that is not too heavy or political. Easy to digest.

Many thanks in advance!
