Can I take any used iphone and use it with Telus as long as I buy a telus simcard?

I lost my iphone but a friend said he'd sell me his old one cheap. He was with rogers, but can i just buy a new sim card from telus and pop it in? His sim card is in his new phone anyways so i would need a new sim card regardless. I just don't really understand the company to company crap with the iphones.

Yes,You can do it.
Before use your Telus sim card on your iphone,Make sure your phone is unlocked.
If it's locked means,you will need to unlock it.
For unlocking you can approach your service provider or else try to buy an unlocking service from any one of the online unlocking service provider like Mobile-Unlocker.com
