An ethernet cable would be preferable. The built in wifi in the PS3 is known to have a weak signal. However, if you are a casual gamer and not wicked competitive then the wireless will probably be fine for you. Since you already have it hooked up to wireless and it seems to be working alright for you stick with it unless you start noticing problems.

it's probably 5mB/s, not mb/s Ethernet is a lot better than wireless. Unlike mice, where wired isn't that much better than wireless, you get double the speed by going wired (because 54mbps isn't 100% utilized)That said, I have my PS3 on a wireless G connection and haven't experienced lag, even when downloading PS3 content in the background. I do experience lag when downloading torrents, but that will also be experienced even with a wired connection.

It's the same for the 360. Wired connection is always best because the download speed is faster and you won't get choppy and weak signals like wireless.
