Why did Virginia Woolf narrate using stream of consciousness?

I understand that using stream of consciousness is a convention of modernist literature, a break away from the tradition, used to reveal interior characterization.

But how does the use of this technique relate to Virginia's own life? (ie. how does it reflect her life and context?)
