What does the 'G' in iPhone 3G or 4G mean?

People say it means Generation... But others say it stands for the network 3G on iPhone.. Obviously iPods would be generation but on iPhone you can debate it stands for the network ( on iPhone 3G and 3Gs) but originally it means Generation. (Gen)
