Is he interested? Or is he just being nice? Please help?!?

Okay, so he's the shy type to begin with... I haven't seen him all year because he studies abroad, but then I did this summer. We sat with him and my family and I noticed him looking and smiling at me a few times when we were talking. We also had common interest in something and he was telling me all about it. He seemed very into it. Then we all went to this restaurant and when I passed him to go to my seat he stood up. When I disliked my order he offered his right away and kept insisting then winked. Everything was pretty short and I don't know because he seemed very shy. I mean, I guess I'm pretty shy myself... Do you know what this means? Was he just being nice or do you think he might like me?
