How do online file backup services work?

From what I understand, they basically keep a copy of any file(s) you like, so you have the file(s) on the website and on your computer. That way, if anything happens to one, you have an identical copy elsewhere. Also, apparently some websites will track any changes to the file(s) on your computer and copy it/them change for change.

My question is, what if you delete the file(s) from your computer? Do they get deleted from the website as well?

I'm considering using a website such as carbonite.com to store my files and clear up space on my hard drive. But I don't want to put the files on this website, think they're safe there, and then delete them from my computer... only to find that they've also been deleted from the website as well.

Thanks.
