I'm looking for the title of a science fiction novel I read most of quite a few years back. I remember it being part of a series.

The details:

1. It detailed the invasion of Earth by a race of almost human-like aliens which had advanced technology (spaceships, able to fire asteroids, etc) which was also primitive (no complex electronics, no advanced culture, that sort of thing). It then followed some humans trying to escape being made prisoners.
2. The beginning of the book has some objects being monitored in outer space, I think a camera on a satellite gets knocked out. Then a bunker in Berlin (and Berlin itself) are destroyed suddenly by an asteroid impact. It turns out the aliens are firing asteroids at important targets. There's a scene in alaska, or the north pole, or somewhere cold and snowy.

I remember the cover being mainly black and red. It had a monochrome picture on the front, I think.
