Blackberry curve 8520 not sending or recieving calls and texts?

I have just got a blackberry curve 8520 and whenever I try to call someone it instantly says call failed and when somoene tries to ring me it goes straight to answerphone, also when I try to send texts it comes up with a clock and then a red cross. I have had it for roughly 4 hours so I'm wondering if it's just going to take like 24 hours or something, but I've no idea what's going on
