Can a long distance relationship work?

I got in touch with an old high school friend a few months ago and we started talking and texting every day. Over the past few months we fell in love and we are now together. The only problem is I am away for work in another state until December and after that I will be going home for good to be with him. We are both getting a lot of comments from friends saying that it isnt worth it to be in a relationship and wait for each other if it will be another six months until we see each other. Do you think there is some truth to that or should we just ignore these comments? We love each other and and I know other people deal with long distance relationships perfectly fine. I think that being far apart from each other and just talking has truly strengthened our bond to each other. These comments from others just bother me.
