flywheel has rope notches at the top and a groove to place the knot from rope in but is it safe to attempt this? its supposed to work. im afraid that if i pull it and it starts the rope will spin and act like a weed whacker. should i hang on to it and if so will the rope release? or should i let go and will it spool up in groove? 1976 65hp mercury 650 outboard. the starter is going out and need to know how to correctly pull start it.

There hard to pull. Make sure you don"t let go or it could cause damage. Wrap it up & give it a good pull. If your worried pull the coil wires so it won't start the 1st time, you will see the rope will release.
