Nictotine is classed as a stimulant
it is also class A carcinogenic along with Alcohol

it is NOT scheduled http://www.drugabuse.gov/drugpages/drugsofabuse.html , it is still classed as a stimulant drug.

and from the above :
Through the use of tobacco, nicotine is one of the most heavily used addictive drugs and the leading preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the U.S. Cigarette smoking accounts for 90% of lung cancer cases in the U.S., and about 38,000 deaths per year can be attributed to secondhand smoke. Cigarettes and chew tobacco are illegal substances in most U.S. states for those under 18; a handful of states have raised the age to 19.

For forty years I smoked between 60 and 100 ciggies every twenty four hours. Couldn't do without one! 12 years back somehow I stopped overnight and haven't lapsed yet. The yearning for sometime afterwards was almost unbearable but I reckon I'm more or less OK now. So, in my humble opinion I am convinced nicotine is a drug and I certainly was an addict.

Jenny you are really stuck on this nicotine thing aren't you? Ok here is my answer then. OF COURSE it isn't a drug, that is just liberal propaganda. I've benn smoking for fifteen years and I can quit whenever, don't need it one bit. HMM Sarcasm HMM But in all seriousness, it is addicting, but a drug? Good question.
