Surviving with Wolves
An author admits through her lawyers that her Holocaust memoir, Surviving with Wolves, was in fact untrue. Misha Defonseca, whose real name is Monique De Wael, created the elaborate story as a child and having repeated it so often she had begun to believe it as fact. The truth came to light when a genealogical researcher investigated the author’s surname and found the facts did not match. The author is already involved in a lawsuit with the publisher and ghostwriter, so it will be interesting to see what happens next.
I suppose the lesson here is to make sure you write the truth if you’re going to publish your memoirs. Make that a lot easier by keeping a journal today.
