Organizing a closet can seem like a monumental task. Small steps like the following can make it easier. The best thing about these is that you don’t have to do them all at once! Pick one thing to do this week, and see how it affects the look of your closet.
1. Purge. Remove items that you haven’t worn in two years, or that don’t fit anymore. Also take out things that you have been “planning to mend” for a long time. If you can’t do it all at once, keep a small container in your closet for these items. Toss things into it as you come across them every day, and don’t retrieve those that are already in it!
2. Use one type and color of hanger per closet. You don’t have to buy new ones all at once. Just gather up all the hangers in your house, and assign a color to each room. Use all-white plastic hangers for the master closet, for example. But do not use wire hangers. They tangle easily, are not sturdy, and are not pretty to look at.
3. Use labeled or see-through boxes to store items that you don’t use often, like dressy shoes and off-season scarves. Put these at the very top of your closet.
4. Install a closet system that has divisions like shelves and slide-out bins. Separate T-shirts, shorts, and sweaters into them.
